SIMS Acupuncture , Nutrition and Immune Issues Discussion

I was invited to take part in a gathering at SIMS Fertility Clinic in Clonskeagh, Dublin this past weekend discussing the integration of Acupuncture and Nutrition as well as information on immune issues and infertility. Dr. David Walsh (Clinical Director of SIMS) asked my good friend and colleague Gordon Mullins, Fertility Acupuncture Specialist, to give a talk about how Fertility Acupuncture, combined with reproductive technologies like IVF, can give greater results for patients (you can visit his website www.aculife.ie here).  Other speakers at the gathering were Doctors from SIMS, such as Dr. Kevin Marron.  They spoke about how immunological factors can impact fertility, the tests they perform at SIMS and the treatments they give to couples experiencing immune system issues. They are making great strides and helping lots of couples with immune issues get pregnant. If you are having difficulty getting pregnant and experience any of the following, it may indicate a possible immune problem:

• Arthritis
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• Skin rashes
• Endometriosis
• Recurrent miscarriage
• Hypothyroidism

At SIMS they suggest testing for immune issues when a woman has had at least 4 embryos transferred in at least 3 different transfers.  Some of the treatments they recommend would vary depending on your particular immune diagnosis.   Examples of some courses of treatment would be Aspirin, Corticosteroids, Intralipids or IV Immunoglobulin.  If you suspect you may have immune issues affecting your fertility I suggest you talk to someone like Dr. Kevin Marron at SIMS.  I spoke with him at length and he is not only very knowledgeable, but very kind as well.

It was a lovely gathering between the modalities of  IVF Doctors from SIMS Acupuncture and Nutritionists. My favourite quote of the day was from Dr. Walsh who said, “We all want to help our patients have babies”.  When people ask me what I do, it really is as simple as that, I help people to have babies.

Does Acupuncture work for infertility?

When people hear what I do, I’m often asked the question:- “Does Acupuncture work for infertility?”  We have a unique treatment method at our clinic that leads to our clients attesting to the efficacy of their treatment with us. Keep reading to learn more about our specialist infertility acupuncture treatments.  There are also numerous scientific research studies that outline the positive effects of acupuncture for a number of varied conditions.

Two recent articles answer the above question from two different perspectives.  And we answer that question from our perspective.

Does acupuncture work: Scientific research

A recent article (click here for article) reported that, “from the Western point of view, developed from numerous studies, acupuncture has been found to have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions, thereby promoting healing. Some of the physiological effects observed by doctors in their research studies include increased circulation of blood and decreased inflammation”. Increased circulation of blood flow certainly help reproductive hormones send their messages as hormones only travel by blood. Good blood flow also leads to a womb lining that is better prepared for implantation of an embryo.  In our fertility acupuncture clinic we focus on increasing blood flow to the uterus and ovaries.

Does acupuncture work:  The MARA Fertility Acupuncture Specialist Clinic Method

You come to us for help in getting pregnant and it can sometimes take more than one menstrual cycle with us to get pregnant. Therefore, at our clinic, we want to make sure that you can see that acupuncture treatment is having an effect.   In order for my clients to know that acupuncture does work for infertility, we set milestones such as visible changes in your reproductive cycle.  For example, if you experience spotting before your period arrives, we aim to eliminate that.  Or if your menstrual flow is dark brown or contains clots, we aim to eliminate that.  We take a very detailed description of how your period is; from PMT to pain to blood colour, days bleed, cycle length, clots, spotting, fertile cervical mucous, and so much more.  We go where noone has gone before!  This way you see the results along the way so you know that indeed acupuncture does work for infertility.  We know what it’s like trying to conceive and we want you to get so much more from acupuncture than just feeling relaxed, de-stressed and sleeping well.  Those things are great and we make sure that you see those results as well, but we know you come  to us for help in getting pregnant.  So if it takes more than one cycle to happen, you at least get to see changes like a bright red blood flow free of spotting and clots.  Acupuncture helps to create a more fertile environment.  An improved lining helps you feel better about your chances of implantation.  Seeing you that you are getting over the hurdles helps you to know you can get over the finish line.  It also helps you to believe in yourself and your body again.  We want you to feel more in control and empowered.  And if you can change the quality of your period and your womb lining, then you feel empowered and in control again for the first time in a very long time.
