If you are reading this, chances are you know first hand that Hot Flashes are one of the most common and annoying of the perimenopause symptoms. They can take you by surprise, they just happen with no warning and seem to take over at inopportune moments. Take heart though, as there are plenty of natural things you can do to help relieve and diminish menopause hot flashes. Acupuncture is one of the best natural ways to find relief from hot flashes. Check out the Mayo Clinic Acupuncture video of a Mayo Clinic Acupuncturist relieving hot flashes with Acupuncture. There are also some very effective herbal supplements you can start taking as well.
Hot flashes may start to happen in peri menopause (the time period usually after the age of 40 & before your last period) and can continue until after menopause age (The time when you have not had a period for a year). When they stop happening for good varies from woman to woman depending on how your own personal hormones level and balance out during your menopause journey, how well you take of yourself and what action you take (like getting menopause acupuncture, healthy eating, etc).
Hot flashes may occur randomly, once off here and there and be mild or they may happen frequently with great intensity and can cause related perimenopause symptoms such as sweating, red hot flushes in the cheeks (this can feel like a sunburn), palpitations (rapid heart beat) and a feeling of pressure in your head.
Hot flashes can occur during the day and night. If it happens at night, hot flashes may interfere with your ability to get a full and restful night’s sleep. Which in turn may affect your energy, your mood and your ability to concentrate the next day. Some women also experience night sweats which is a similar perimenopause symptom : it is waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat (you may even have to change your pyjama’s because they are soaked), but not necessarily feeling the heat/ hot flash in your face.
There are plenty of natural, effective remedies to cure hot flashes, so if you find the frequency of hot flashes and hot flushes is disruptive to your life, take some action, take back control of your life, I did and it certainly has made all the difference!
You can visit your doctor for blood tests to determine where your hormone levels are at. It can be beneficial to get a baseline scan to determine where you are now so that future tests can be compared to the baseline levels of hormones and you can then see how things progress over time. You can also purchase at home menopause hormone tests for your convenience. You can see home at home hormone tests on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk
Always consult your doctor before taking any supplements, herbs or vitamins, especially if you are doing IVF.

I was invited to take part in a gathering at SIMS Fertility Clinic in Clonskeagh, Dublin this past weekend discussing the integration of Acupuncture and Nutrition as well as information on immune issues and infertility. Dr. David Walsh (Clinical Director of SIMS) asked my good friend and colleague Gordon Mullins, Fertility Acupuncture Specialist, to give a talk about how Fertility Acupuncture, combined with reproductive technologies like IVF, can give greater results for patients (you can visit his website www.aculife.ie here). Other speakers at the gathering were Doctors from SIMS, such as Dr. Kevin Marron. They spoke about how immunological factors can impact fertility, the tests they perform at SIMS and the treatments they give to couples experiencing immune system issues. They are making great strides and helping lots of couples with immune issues get pregnant. If you are having difficulty getting pregnant and experience any of the following, it may indicate a possible immune problem:
At SIMS they suggest testing for immune issues when a woman has had at least 4 embryos transferred in at least 3 different transfers. Some of the treatments they recommend would vary depending on your particular immune diagnosis. Examples of some courses of treatment would be Aspirin, Corticosteroids, Intralipids or IV Immunoglobulin. If you suspect you may have immune issues affecting your fertility I suggest you talk to someone like Dr. Kevin Marron at SIMS. I spoke with him at length and he is not only very knowledgeable, but very kind as well.
It was a lovely gathering between the modalities of IVF Doctors from SIMS Acupuncture and Nutritionists. My favourite quote of the day was from Dr. Walsh who said, “We all want to help our patients have babies”. When people ask me what I do, it really is as simple as that, I help people to have babies.
Another speaker was Dr. Trevor Wing, best known in the UK for being a pioneering Doctor of Gynaecology helping women to conceive naturally. His website is www.naturalgynae.com
I also met a lovely and knowledgeable nutritionist named Ciara Wright, PhD DipNT mNTOI. She is a senior nutritionist at The Glenville Nutrition Ireland Clinic which is located in Rathgar, Dublin 6. You can visit their website www.glenvillenutrition.ie They are associated with the well known Nutritionist in the UK, Dr. Marilyn Glenville PhD. If you are interested in changing your diet to enhance your chances of getting pregnant, I highly recommend you see Ciara.
SIMS Fertility Clinic regularly has free Fertility Information Events where their top fertility specialists talk about how to beat infertility. Click here to visit the SIMS website to find out the next available open information event and register.
Always consult your doctor for medical advice and before taking any supplements, herbs or vitamins, especially if you are doing IVF.

When people hear what I do, I’m often asked the question:- “Does Acupuncture work for infertility?” We have a unique treatment method at our clinic that leads to our clients attesting to the efficacy of their treatment with us. Keep reading to learn more about our specialist infertility acupuncture treatments. There are also numerous scientific research studies that outline the positive effects of acupuncture for a number of varied conditions.
Two recent articles answer the above question from two different perspectives. And we answer that question from our perspective.
A recent article (click here for article) reported that, “from the Western point of view, developed from numerous studies, acupuncture has been found to have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions, thereby promoting healing. Some of the physiological effects observed by doctors in their research studies include increased circulation of blood and decreased inflammation”. Increased circulation of blood flow certainly help reproductive hormones send their messages as hormones only travel by blood. Good blood flow also leads to a womb lining that is better prepared for implantation of an embryo. In our fertility acupuncture clinic we focus on increasing blood flow to the uterus and ovaries.
The clients at our testimonial page attest from their own experience how our acupuncture for infertility works for them and as always privacy and confidentiality is strictly adhered to in our clinic and testimonials page. The photo above is of just a few of the many cards we have received over the years to thank us. I cherish each and every one of the thank you cards I have received. On the other hand celebrities are not slow in speaking out publicly and highlighting the success of acupuncture in treating their own difficulties in trying to conceive. Click here for a recent article about Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Natalie Portman: they all attribute their successful pregnancies to acupuncture for fertility and pregnancy.
You come to us for help in getting pregnant and it can sometimes take more than one menstrual cycle with us to get pregnant. Therefore, at our clinic, we want to make sure that you can see that acupuncture treatment is having an effect. In order for my clients to know that acupuncture does work for infertility, we set milestones such as visible changes in your reproductive cycle. For example, if you experience spotting before your period arrives, we aim to eliminate that. Or if your menstrual flow is dark brown or contains clots, we aim to eliminate that. We take a very detailed description of how your period is; from PMT to pain to blood colour, days bleed, cycle length, clots, spotting, fertile cervical mucous, and so much more. We go where noone has gone before! This way you see the results along the way so you know that indeed acupuncture does work for infertility. We know what it’s like trying to conceive and we want you to get so much more from acupuncture than just feeling relaxed, de-stressed and sleeping well. Those things are great and we make sure that you see those results as well, but we know you come to us for help in getting pregnant. So if it takes more than one cycle to happen, you at least get to see changes like a bright red blood flow free of spotting and clots. Acupuncture helps to create a more fertile environment. An improved lining helps you feel better about your chances of implantation. Seeing you that you are getting over the hurdles helps you to know you can get over the finish line. It also helps you to believe in yourself and your body again. We want you to feel more in control and empowered. And if you can change the quality of your period and your womb lining, then you feel empowered and in control again for the first time in a very long time.
So, does acupuncture work for infertility? Well, at MARA, we see acupuncture creating a more fertile environment with every improved period, with every pregnancy and with each and every thank you card.
