Fats for Fertility

Fats for Fertility

Author Linda Ryan, BA, Lic TCM, CH

It used to be that doctors, nutritionists and dieticians gave us the advice us to eat “fat free”.  Time has moved on and there is now clear evidence that proves that friendly fats, including saturated fats, are not the enemy. Fats for fertility boosting benefits are very helpful.  And avoiding fats to avoid “getting fat” is a myth.

Fats play a vital role in boosting your health from everything from helping your skin and your nerves to most importantly optimal hormone production, which is vital for fertility boosting benefits.

Friendly fats also help reduce inflammation, promote a healthy heart, and healthy brain function, which is also beneficial for setting up the conditions to allow pregnancy to happen.

There are 3 types of healthy Fats for Fertility boosting benefits.  These should be incorporated into your diet on a consistent basis.

The 3 types of healthy Fats for Fertility are:

  1. Saturated fats-  These are found in foods like healthy animal fats (grass fed beef, chicken thighs), grass fed butter or coconut oil.  These are not to be consumed in excess.
  2. Monounsaturated fats-  These are found in foods like mixed raw nuts, raw nut butters, avocado, olives and olive oil.
  3. Polyunsaturated fats- These are found in fish oils (wild caught salmon for example…or an EPA/DHA supplement), flaxseed oil. Hemp is even a great source.

Here are a few great ways to add healthy fats for fertility in your diet:

  • For a snack have a handful of nuts or
  • Add nuts to your morning porridge or cereal
  • Have fish at least 2 times per week
  • Add avocado slices to salads
  • Use olive oil in salad dressings
  • When cooking, use coconut oil instead of butter or other oils
  • Take a high quality Omega supplement, you can easily buy it here on Amazon: Omega supplement

Fats to Avoid: Trans Fats

Trans fats are definitely not healthy.  Trans fats are the ones that lead to conditions like high cholesterol, clogged arteries and heart disease.  Trans fats are created in a lab through a process called hydrogenation.  Another big reason you should try to avoid trans fats at all costs is because your body does not know how to process them and they are, in fact, damaging.  The way to spot Trans fats in foods is to read the label. If the label includes anything “hydrogenated” listed in it, then it has a Trans fat.

Always consult your doctor before taking any supplements, herbs or vitamins, especially if you are doing IVF.

Wine and Fertility: New Study Indicates Drinking Red Wine May Boost Fertility

Red Wine May Boost Fertility

Alcohol and fertility, to drink or not to drink when trying to get pregnant? When it comes to alcohol and fertility, many women ask “Can alcohol affect fertility?” A new study has shown that women who drink at least one glass of red wine per week could support ovarian egg reserve better than those who do not.

The researchers studying alcohol and fertility have come towine and fertility the conclusion that drinking red wine may boost fertility based on the content of Resveratrol in red wine.  Resveratrol is abundant in red grapes, blueberries and cocoa.  It is an antioxidant that protects cells against biological stress.  Physicians at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, studied the association between various alcoholic drinks and ovarian reserve.

They found a connection between red wine and fertility. Their findings are that women who drink one glass a week of red wine may boost their fertility.  Click here to read the study in The Medical Journal Fertility and Sterility.

The study consisted of 135 women.  They were between the ages of 18 and 44.  Each woman in the study kept an alcohol diary, where they noted how much they consumed each month. During this time period the physicians also conducted regular ultrasound scans on each of the women and calculated their ovarian egg reserve. What they found was that those women who regularly consumed red wine, regardless of other factors such as age and income, had a better ovarian reserve.

Caution: How much red wine is ok to drink when trying to conceive?

An article about this wine and fertility study in The Independant stated: “However, the study’s results don’t indicate that those trying to conceive should have a glass of red wine every day. The research only showed the fertility boosting benefit for women who drank moderate amounts of red wine (around 5 glasses each month).

“Experts have also been quick to point out that the results should be considered with caution, as the study hadn’t proved that the wine was solely responsibly for the fertility boost in participants. Adam Balen, chairman of the British Fertility Society, told The Times that the research was “interesting,” but insisted that further studies would be necessary in order to prove the findings. “This is an interesting study, albeit with a small sample size which means that it doesn’t reach statistical significance. “However, the exposure of the developing foetus to alcohol may cause irreversible developmental damage, so alcohol consumption should be less than six units [roughly two large glasses of wine] per week for women wishing to conceive.””

Trying To Get Pregnant : How do you create life?

Trying to get pregnant: How do you create life?

Author Linda Ryan, BA, Lic TCM, CH

It’s been a while since my last blog.  I haven’t posted a blog since my father died in February.  I never had anyone close to me die until then. It’s been yet another life changing experience for me.  Trying to get pregnant was life changing because I had to learn to deal with the lack of control I felt over something I wanted so badly.  And now the loss of my father-again lack of control over something. Almost anything else in life you could somehow get what you wanted: work for it, buy it, study for it, beg, borrow or steal it.  But life and death?  How do you sustain or create life?  What I  have learned is the best any of us can do is to simply create the conditions that will allow something  to spring forth.  Working in the field of fertility for the past 15 years has taught me that this can be done in any number of ways and is different for every person.  The common denominator is “abundance” .  The changes you make should not make your life and your world feel smaller, restricted.  So plan that holiday, go for the promotion, do exercise you enjoy, eat foods you enjoy.  You have to keep trying things, switch gears when necessary, give it time. Figure out your magic mix for trying to get pregnant.

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”  Thomas Edison.

Noone has a crystal ball and can say that you will not get pregnant.  trying to get pregnantI hear this all the time that some “expert” has told a woman that she can’t get pregnant and then she gets pregnant and it’s called a miracle.  It’s not a miracle.  I think it’s important to stress that because it takes power away from the woman, when really it was her body, mind and power.  I think it’s important for women to know that they CAN get pregnant.  Even if it’s through IVF or Acupuncture or prayer, the woman still does it herself and she deserves the credit.  My part, my contribution is a tool she used.

Remembering what it felt like when I was trying to get pregnant is what inspired me to work in the fertility field and help others trying to get pregnant to have babies. I now get to spend every day in work trying to help couples bring new life into the world.  Having a life leave my world has now made my work even more special to me. Family is vitally important to us humans.  I feel so lucky to be able help women have babies, to help create families.  I get to take away stress and renew women’s faith in their bodies.  I get to help build, to help create and that is oh so satisfying 🙂

Always consult your doctor for medical advice.
